Give us a lift: Help us replace our truck!

Donations are the cornerstone of Community Forklift. Without a steady stream of reusable building materials, our nonprofit wouldn’t exist. However, many of the donors who offer us great stuff are not able to transport their materials to us. So we have a pick-up crew – our two big box trucks are on the road five days a week rescuing reusable items around the region.

Our truck team is responsible for about half of the donations that arrive at the Forklift each year. That’s a LOT of materials that would have otherwise gone to the landfill or incinerator, but are instead turned into resources and jobs.

It’s a community service we are proud to offer, but about a month ago, the engine in one of our trucks went bad! Please consider a donation to help us stay on the road…

Community Forklift Spotlight: The Donations Team

Community Forklift aims to turn the construction waste stream into a resource stream for communities in the DC region.  Throughout December, we’ll be highlighting the work we do to support our neighbors and our staff.  If you like what you see and want to lend a hand, you can make a financial contribution on our website. Your support is crucial to our work.  Every gift, large or small, helps us lift up local communities through reuse. ***************** Did you know we pick up donations? Each day we send out two box trucks in the DC area to pick up items donated by residents, contractors, and businesses. You may not see our truck crews around the warehouse, but you’ve definitely seen the results of their work: About half of our incoming donations are received and transported by them. Scheduled by our in-office Donations Team, most of what our crews collect are the items too big or numerous for folks to lift and transport on their own. Small business owners especially appreciate this service. When they have surplus inventory or leftovers from renovations, it costs them a great deal to rent dumpsters or pay fees at the landfill or incinerator. When we come pick up their materials, not only do they avoid disposal costs but they can receive tax deductions – and for these mom & pop shops, every little savings helps them survive and thrive. It’s a winning situation for the local economy and environment! Everyone from granite fabricators and tile suppliers to restauranteurs and local hardware stores are able to save money by donating. Reducing the waste stream eases the pressure on local governments to spend tax revenues on new incinerators & landfills.  Then all that reusable material arrives at our warehouse, making repairs more affordable for everyone. For example, just two weeks ago we picked up some nifty shelves from Kogold Liquor in NW DC. They were updating their displays, and instead of throwing away their old ones, they donated them to us.  They were so happy that they even posted a thank-you on Instagram: “We are so grateful that @communityforklift is giving our outgoing wine shelves a new life!” If you have reusable materials and would like to schedule a pick up, please review our Donations Guidelines...
