Retail Sales Weekend Shift Supervisor

Position Title: Retail Sales Weekend Shift Supervisor (some weekends required)

About Community Forklift 

Community Forklift is a nonprofit reuse center for home improvement and architectural salvage. The store accepts donations of new, gently-used and vintage building materials; these donated renovation supplies are then made available to the public at low prices and donated to local nonprofits. 

Our goals are to encourage community revitalization by: making repairs more affordable for low-income individuals, homeowners, small businesses and nonprofits; keeping reusable items out of landfills and reducing demand for virgin material; and creating local green jobs and economic growth.

We are proud to be in the Port Towns area in Central Prince George's County, which is receiving national attention for its growing green business sector. Community Forklift is located outside Northeast DC, near the Hyattsville Arts District and easily accessible from I-295, Kenilworth Ave, and Route 1 (Rhode Island Ave.). The warehouse is very close to the Northeast Branch Bike Trail and within walking distance of several bus lines and a UMD shuttle stop.

About You 

Community Forklift is seeking an outgoing, detail oriented, mission-driven individual with retail supervisory experience and excellent people skills to work with our growing green business. The Sales Shift Supervisor oversees the sales desk and supervises Reuse Associates on the weekends (and potentially some weekdays). The supervisor is responsible for creating a welcoming environment, positively engaging visitors to the warehouse, and providing superior, friendly service to all Forklift Fans.   Prior supervisory experience is required - this is not an entry-level position. Qualities of the perfect candidate:

  • Prior retail management/supervisory experience 
  • Proven success supervising staff and providing leadershi
  • Ability to create and maintain a cooperative team-based work environment
  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Outgoing personality and natural ability to make others feel comfortable 
  • Self-starter and creative problem solver 
  • Experience exercising sound judgment and common sense
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Able to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
  • Ability to assist customers or donors, including a diverse range of people with varied backgrounds and personalities, in a friendly, patient and courteous manner
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for recycling, reuse, sustainability, environmental advocacy and green business
  • Able to perform physical labor in all seasons (our warehouse is NOT temperature controlled)
  • Strong English speaking and writing skills (BIG plus: strong Spanish speaking and writing skills)
  • REQUIRED: Available to work weekends (Sat and Sun) 

About the Position: 

What you'll do as our new Sales Shift Supervisor: 

  • Provide direct sales assistance to customers; support reuse staff assisting with customer sales
  • Continually train and support reuse associates
  • Provide decision making authority for sales related issues during designated shift to include staffing, customer service and policy implementation
  • Assist in development and implementation of policies and procedures for improved cash flow operations
  • Provide effective organization and improvement of all check out and sales related policies and procedures
  • Responsible for accurately counting cash drawers and recording these transactions
  • Ensure accurate recordkeeping for consignment sales, customer discounts, employee purchases as well as other sales related financial procedures
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff to fulfill the CF mission and support team activities
  • Solid commitment to the Community Forklift mission and passion for our work
  • Available to work both Saturdays and Sundays as well as additional weekly hours

Truck Driver

Position Title: Truck Driver (Monday – Friday, very occasional weekend work)

Truck Driver Needed for Green Business

Community Forklift is seeking a full-time Truck Driver to work with our growing green business. This person will represent the organization while picking up used and surplus building materials in the DC area.

Responsibilities include driving our 24-foot box truck with manual transmission, loading donated materials carefully, and providing friendly service to donors. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred. All applicants must have an excellent driving record, a friendly personality, relevant driving experience and a current Maryland Department of Transportation medical card. If you do not have medical card, you will need a physical before you begin. Prior related driving experience is required!  Some knowledge of building materials, design, and/or antiques is a plus.

Qualities of the perfect candidate

  • Verifiable experience driving a manual transmission 24-foot box truck. Professional driving references a must.
  • Ability to carefully load and secure materials onto the truck and offload at a warehouse location
  • Capacity to perform physical labor and moderate to heavy lifting in a non-climate controlled environment including the ability to work in all seasons and in difficult weather conditions
  • Ability to use computer scheduling and an iPad for navigation
  • Outgoing personality and the natural ability to communicate with donors
  • Exercise sound judgment and common sense; trustworthy and conscientious
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Strong English speaking skills, bilingual Spanish speaking skills a plus!
  • Working knowledge of building materials or architectural salvage
  • Familiarity and enthusiasm for recycling, reuse, sustainability, environmental advocacy and green business

About the Position 

  • 35-40 hours a week
  • Move materials from construction sites, yards, parking garages and other difficult to access areas and help set them up in the warehouse
  • Recognize acceptable and unacceptable materials for pick-up and provide information to donors and customers about those items
  • Ensure that each donation picked up has all parts and pieces labeled and attached
  • Assist keeping equipment and truck organized, tidy and in good working order
  • Provide excellent customer service to donors as well as answer questions about Community Forklift's mission
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with staff to fulfill the mission and support team activities
