This March, Community Forklift is joining forces with DC-area nurseries to collect donations of garden tools and supplies for a good cause.  It’s a great excuse to clean out your garage or shed!

Patio furniture, lawn and garden supplies in working condition (mowers, hoses, hand tools, power tools or lighting), or decorative landscaping items (pottery, birdbaths, arbors, edging, brick or stone) will be greatly appreciated.

Donations will be collected at the following locations:

  • March 7th from 10-4 at Johnson’s Florist and Garden Center, 5011 Olney-Laytonsville Road, Olney, MD
  • March 14th from 10-4 at Campbell & Ferrara, 8351 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA
  • March 14th from 12-5 at Behnke Nurseries, 11300 Baltimore Avenue, Beltsville, MD
  • March 21st from 12-5 at Behnke Nurseries, 11300 Baltimore Avenue, Beltsville, MD
  • EVERY DAY AT COMMUNITY FORKLIFT! Just Drop them off at least a half hour before we close.

All donations are tax-deductible.  If you are unable to attend the collection events, or if you have a large donation such as a riding mower or building materials, please email to schedule a free pickup at your home.

The tools will be sold on Saturday, March 28th, during Community Forklift’s annual Garden Party and Sale, where we welcome the spring gardening season, complete with free workshops, live music and a lemonade lunch. Your gently-used garden supplies and patio furniture will help make this fundraising event a success.

Proceeds from the sale of the garden items will support Community Forklift’s work to lift up communities in the DC metro region by reducing waste, creating green jobs, and making repairs affordable.

In 2014, the Forklift was able to provide over $32,000 in free materials to neighbors in need, local organizations, and nonprofits, including schools, civic groups, and community gardens. For example, in DC, Community Forklift worked with the National Building Museum’s Teen Design Apprenticeship Program to provide materials to construct five Little Free Libraries for use in community gardens throughout the city. In Prince George’s County, Parkdale High School used Forklift supplies to build beds in the school garden. Volunteer groups like Christmas in April and Yachad have also received materials and tools to fix up homes and properties for families in need and seniors with disabilities.
