Before and After: Forklift Fans put salvaged materials to good reuse!

This awesome cabinet from the reuse warehouse got a light, bright upcycle! I love the carved detail between the two doors and the little lip at the back of the top. Thanks for giving this salvaged piece of furniture a new purpose through reuse! Photos by @linnyfriend (Instagram)

Check out the vintage doorknob hardware from Community Forklift that was used in this closet makeover! The warm tone of the hardware looks fantastic against the dark satin finish of the door. Thanks for upcycling these knobs and giving them a new (incredibly stylish) use! Project by @malcolmsimmons (Instagram), “after” photo by @eastandlane (Instagram)

Check out how a Community Forklift fan used these lockers from our reuse warehouse in her home gym project! Purchased for $80, a contractor helped incorporate them into the room and give them a built-in feel. Thanks for choosing reuse and giving these lockers a new home! Photos by @seemeindc (Instagram)

A reuse fan made some great stuff out of Treincarnation lumber from Community Forklift! The live edge walnut slab in the before photo turned into the three matching cutting boards in the back. The wood grain and color are beautiful! The cribbage board up front is also from Treincarnation lumber, this time Siberian Elm. Thanks finding so many great uses for this salvaged wood! Photos by @bro.ken_woodworking (Instagram)

These salvaged cabinets from Community Forklift’s reuse warehouse look stellar in this kitchen renovation! Painted and reconfigured to fit the new galley kitchen space, you’d never guess the set was salvaged. Thanks for giving these materials a new home and helping to save them from the landfill! Photos by @theredbrickrowhome (Instagram)

These neat little shelves for spices are a creative idea! Convenient but out of the way and organized, I think the many-colored contents double as art. Thanks to a reuse fan for sharing their upcycling project using salvaged materials from the reuse warehouse! Photos by @thirdpaige (Instagram)

Check out this awesome kitchen renovation incorporating salvaged materials from the Community Forklift reuse warehouse! The 19-piece cabinet set, soapstone counter with integrated sink, and wall oven are all secondhand materials. Thanks for choosing reuse, conserving natural resources, and supporting the community and our nonprofit!

This live edge countertop created with Treincarnation lumber from Community Forklift is gorgeous! The rich, warm natural wood works so well with the blue tile and white cabinets. Treincarnation live edge lumber is milled from trees felled by storms or removed for development. Thanks for choosing reuse and supporting our nonprofit!

Did you know Community Forklift stocks salvaged cabinet doors? Check out this upcycled tray that a Forklift Fan created using one along with some drawer pulls! Thanks for choosing reuse and giving these doors a creative new purpose! Photos by @foreverandalwaysvintage (Facebook/Instagram)

Vintage Diet: “dry toast” and “plenty of steak”

Vintage Diet: “dry toast” and “plenty of steak”

Sometimes the salvaged items that are donated to our reuse warehouse come with fascinating looks into the lives of the previous owners. Photos, letters, Christmas cards, business cards, and newspapers are just a few of the items that we’ve found stashed in the backs of drawers or at the bottoms of trunks.

The message below was found wedged in a vintage office desk! Typed on the letterhead of a local safe and lock company, this copy of “Mayo’s Two Week Diet” details a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu for weight loss. A similar diet was published in The Oxford (Michigan) Leader on November 1, 1961 and the safe and lock company was located at the address on the letterhead from 1952 to 1966, so this typed letter could be from around then.

In any case, it’s an interesting snapshot of food and language at a specific time. Transcription below!

Mayo’s Two Week Diet – No substitutes please

Follow this diet carefully for two weeks, not only abstaining from anything not included in it but also eating what is assigned rather than doing without. Naturally a certain amount of common sense has to be used; for example the vegetables without butter, the salads without oils other than mineral, the grapefruit without sugar, and no cream in the coffee or tea, and of course only the lean part of steak or chop to be eaten.

It is better to begin the diet on a Monday, though, of course, Monday’s menu may be the start of the two weeks on any one day of the week, in which case Monday is the first day of the diet, Tuesday, the second, etc. The advantage of actually beginning on a Monday is that it works out a little better with regard to Monday dinner, etc. It is possible to begin on any other day with the diet of that day: for example begin on Wednesday with the diet of Wednesday, although the meals are a little more substantial toward the end of the week. The loss of weight over the period may be neither so large nor so rapid if it is gone about in this way. Alcoholic beverages are debatable at this time, but at any rate sweet cocktails and beer should not be taken.

Weight loss may be from ten to twenty pounds in two weeks. Do not follow this diet for longer than two weeks. It is harmless for two weeks but not longer. To keep from regaining lost weight simply cut down on meals in general, starches and sweets in particular.

Breakfast: Exactly the same for every day of the diet.
Grapefruit, one or two eggs, and black coffee. No butter on eggs. if they are fried, use mineral oil.

Monday:
Luncheon: 3 eggs, tomatoes, coffee
Dinner: 3 eggs, combination salad, one piece of dry toast, grapefruit

Tuesday:
Luncheon: One or two eggs, grapefruit, coffee
Dinner: Steak, tomatoes, lettuce, celery, olives, cucumbers, coffee

Wednesday:
Luncheon: 2 eggs, tomatoes, spinach
Dinner: Two lamp chops, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, coffee or tea

Thursday:
Luncheon: Combination salad, grapefruit, coffee
Dinner: Eggs, cottage cheese, spinach, one piece of dry toast

Friday:
Luncheon: Eggs, spinach, coffee
Dinner: Fish, combination salad, one piece dry toast

Saturday:
Luncheon: Fruit salad, nothing else
Dinner: Plenty of steak, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, tea or coffee

Sunday:
Luncheon: Cold chicken, tomatoes, grapefruit
Dinner: Chicken, tomatoes, cooked cabbage, carrots, celery, vegetable soup, grapefruit, coffee or tea

It’s “Forking Amazing”!

One of the most visible things about Community Forklift is our reuse warehouse store full new and used salvaged building materials, appliances, furniture, and more. This fun and funky space is great in itself, but there are even greater accomplishments happening below the surface. This spring we’re celebrating these “Forking Amazing” things that reuse does for our community, including:

  • Providing free materials to households with limited income
  • Distributing free materials to community organizations
  • Conserving natural resources and reducing waste
  • Creating good green local jobs
  • Fostering a sustainable and just community
  • Preserving historic materials and supporting reuse

Help us continue to provide these benefits to our community by supporting your hometown reuse nonprofit. If you appreciate the work that we do, here’s how you can help:

  • Donate $25 or more at the front desk in our reuse warehouse and get one of these snazzy limited edition “Forking Amazing” tshirts!
  • Donate $1 or more at the front desk and add your name to our “Forking Amazing” wall! Ask at the front desk and they’ll give you a nametag to fill out and stick up there.
  • Ask at the front desk for a free “Forking Amazing” sticker! Wear or share it with pride and let other people know why the Community Forklift reuse warehouse is so “Forking Amazing”!

As always, we appreciate your support for Community Forklift and for helping us continue to lift up our neighbors through reuse. Thank you for being a part of our “Forking Amazing” community!

Cheverly American Legion gets an ADA-accessible upgrade with free salvaged tile

Cheverly American Legion gets an ADA-accessible upgrade with free salvaged tile

Situated on a hill near the entrance to Cheverly, American Legion Post 108 has been a reminder of patriotism and civic mindedness for all those that pass by since its construction in 1941. The building itself embodies stewardship and a love of country as materials from the White House, Mclean Mansion, and the U.S. Supreme Court were all used in its construction.

Considering this history of reuse, partnering with Community Forklift for a bathroom renovation was a perfect fit! We were proud to distribute free materials to the Cheverly American Legion through the Community Building Blocks (CBB) Program. The donated surplus floor tile was used to repair and upgrade a restroom to meet ADA accessibility guidelines.

Considering this history of reuse, partnering with Community Forklift for a bathroom renovation was a perfect fit!

American Legion members are primarily veterans and their families, but the post hosts events for its members as well as for the community at large, including Boy and Girl Scout Troops. In addition, the Cheverly American Legion — along with the American Legion of Maryland — is involved in numerous charitable operations. Some of their charitable activities include providing scholarships to deserving students, assisting veterans in completing their VA benefits paperwork, and administering Maryland American Legion Youth Programs.

Community Forklift’s CBB program provides free materials to organizations for projects that benefit the community. Since 2011, we’ve worked with 400+ organizations and awarded over $400,000 in store credit for free materials. Visit our website to learn more and apply!

Going into the future, the Cheverly American Legion will surely remain a bedrock in the community, and we are thankful for the opportunity to contribute to it by providing tile for its bathroom upgrade.
