Creative Reuse Ideas For Vintage Brass And Glass Lights!

Creative Reuse Ideas For Vintage Brass And Glass Lights!

These brass and glass lantern lights were easy to find in the foyers, halls, and dining rooms of 1980’s homes. Tastes in lighting might have changed, but these fixtures still have a lot of potential … even if you don’t use them as lights!

Candle Lantern

This candle lantern was created using a hanging foyer light from Community Forklift. The light sockets and central lighting column were removed, and a base created out of two pieces of scrap wood. Six salvaged dresser drawer knobs from Community Forklift were also used for decorative feet.

Outside the scrap wood, total cost for this project was only $20 ($18 for the light, $2 for the set of knobs)! It’s a fun and affordable way to create a custom candle holder. We have multiple sizes of this foyer lighting, so you could also create a family of lanterns of different sizes. They’d look great flanking a front door or lining a dining room buffet!

Terrarium

Treat your plants to some stylish new digs! This terrarium was created using a low pot and the shade from a flush-mount light from Community Forklift. If you don’t have a pot that fits the diameter of the shade, try the housewares department and look for some baking tins or serving dishes!

Before planting, it’s important to do some research on what type of environment will best suit your plant of choice. Using different soils, bases, and either closed or open lanterns will affect the conditions inside the terrarium. And if you are using multiple plants in the same terrarium, make sure they all like the same environment!

Get Creative

Visit the reuse warehouse and check out the different shapes and sizes of light fixtures that we have available. And then get creative! Could you use the tall lantern above as a terrarium for a single potted plant? Would the flush-mount light make a good votive candle holder? How else could you use these light fixtures?

Donate an AC unit and keep your community cool this summer!

Donate an AC unit and keep your community cool this summer!

May 19, 2021

Every year, Community Forklift’s Home Essentials Program (HELP) provides dozens of free air conditioners to neighbors who need one but can’t afford it. Many seniors and people with medical conditions risk serious health problems as the temperatures rise. For an elderly neighbor, someone suffering from heart or lung problems, or a child with asthma growing up in a neighborhood with heavily-polluted air, an air conditioner can make a world of difference.

This year we already have 18 households waiting for A/C units and summer hasn’t even begun! We need your help to deliver cool air to your neighbors in need! Here’s how:

  1. DONATE: You can donate unneeded window or in-room air conditioning units under 10 years of age at our reuse warehouse in Hyattsville, MD. We are open Monday through Sunday, 12 to 5 pm.
  2. FUND THE CAUSE: Help us buy new units to donate directly to a Home Essentials client! When donating money through our online contribution form, add a note in the comments section that you’d like your contribution to go to the HELP program.
  3. BUY AND DONATE A NEW A/C UNIT: If you don’t have a used A/C unit to donate, we also accept new ones! Just drop it off at the reuse warehouse any day between 12 and 5 pm and pick up your receipt for your tax-deductible donation.
  4. SPREAD THE WORD: Do you know of someone who might have an air conditioner to donate? Let your family, friends, and neighbors know that we can put it to good use!

Community Forklift is a 501(c)3 non-profit and your donation is tax-deductible to the maximum extent allowed by law. Every act of support, whether it’s a material donation, financial gift, or verbal advocacy, will help our neighbors beat the heat this summer. Thank you!

A Fabulous Teacher’s Lounge Transformation

A Fabulous Teacher’s Lounge Transformation

As schools and educators were preparing to return to school for in-person learning, Mt. Rainier Elementary School decided to show their appreciation for teachers by transforming its existing Teacher’s Lounge into an inviting vibrant space where staff can relax!

Community Forklift’s Community Building Blocks program provided the school with a dining set and side table for the newly refurbished space. Jasmine Washington, Community School Coordinator at Mt. Rainier Elementary, shared that she was inspired to create a space for the teachers to “unwind and reset.” She added that “having a place for staff members to get away from their work tasks can help decrease stress levels and increase productivity. Allowing staff members a place where they can spend some time away from their workspace to relax and reboot, especially when doing complex or repetitive tasks.”

Once the project was completed, Jasmine sent us a few photos and a kind message: “It was a pleasure to work with Community Forklift on another project that benefits school culture. Our vision was to create a space that staff members could take a breather from their classes. We were very intentional about picking the paint color to the artwork in the space…We are grateful for the partnership with [Community Forklift] and looking forward to collaborating on future projects.”

Teachers had a lot to say about the project too!
Collett Thomas: “I feel happy and refreshed when I walk in. The furniture, the artwork, the overall vibe definitely brings out the ‘lounge.’ Great job and many thanks!”
Andrea Vincent: “Our lounge went from ‘depressing’ to ‘do I really get to sit here and enjoy lunch.'”
Mark Sandy: “I have benefitted from the teacher’s lounge project in many ways. It has provided a space that has improved my mental health. The lounge is bright, comfortable, smells good and a place I can now be productive, take a break, eat and recharge. The artwork also adds a nice touch as I see different things each time I look at them. It has provided a sanctuary that I want to sit and share with my colleagues.”
Ivette Quarles: “Love it!  A nice calm place where I go to relax during breaks.  The lemongrass in the diffuser makes my mind wander to the beach, while the comfy sofa provides a spot for a quick ‘cat nap’ in order to recharge.”
Shari Flynn: “Entering the lounge just makes me feel special. It makes me feel like someone cares about me. I truly appreciate the time, work and donations that have created the uplifting space we have now.”
Sharon Lo: “Thank you for providing us a relaxing staff lounge that I personally enjoy during my 30 minutes break. It gave me a calming space, enjoy my meal, and a smile on my face. Lastly, thank you for looking after our well-being during our work hours.”
Greer Spicer: “During the first few weeks after students returned to the building, you would walk into the lounge and instantly be swept away.  Fluorescent lights were off since we have great lamps, the oil diffuser was scenting the room lightly, and teachers were relaxing with heads back and eyes closed.  It is our oasis from the stresses of teaching hybrid!”

Mt. Rainier Elementary School and its Parent Teacher Organization members have done an amazing job designing the Teacher’s Lounge. We want to give a big thanks to all the teachers that go above and beyond for their students and hope that they will enjoy their new space!

This awesome garden planter box was fashioned out of a cabinet and wooden posts from Community Forklift. From scrap to salad!

Check out this trellis created with wrought iron pieces from Community Forklift! This one was made with fence and railing panels, but you could also make one out of salvaged doors.

A creative Forklift Fan used a plant stand and salvaged cabinet door from Community Forklift to create this sleek and modern bar cart! A 1×4 for the top tray sides, plexiglass for the bottom shelf, and some spray paint helped complete the transformation.

A vinegar bath and some cleaning did wonders for this $1 vintage hardware from Community Forklift! The new owner liked them so much, she came back to the warehouse and bought more. They look great on the vintage cabinets in her 1941 home!
